Who are we?

Planet Mercy is a registered UK charity. We are under the umbrella organisation of Madina Institute UK. We started in 2009 working in the Oldham and Rochdale areas of the North West of England. We have since expanded to cover the Midlands, Yorkshire and Peterborough districts. Unlike many UK charities, we emphasise on working locally and supporting the communities around us. We deal with the here and now.

What is our ethos?

“To improve communities is to improve humanity. Our mission is to bring people together by promoting cohesion, tolerance and understanding. We strive to offer solutions and direction on a local scale to make a global impact. Community development is at the heart of everything we do as we believe better communities will make a better world.” #CommunityMatters

Our core areas of service include:

  1. COMMUNITY KITCHENS
  2. YOUTH SERVICES
  3. COMMUNITY COHESION
  4. SKILLS FOR LIFE

What are our objectives?

“To develop the capacity and skill of the members of the socially and economically excluded and/or disadvantaged community in local areas within England in such a way that they are better able to identify and help meet their needs so that they may participate more fully in society.”

We aim to:

  1. To reduce food poverty within local areas
  2. To educate communities by highlighting integration needs and bridging the gaps to overcome this
  3. To improve quality of life for local people by providing skills for life
  4. To raise awareness of mental health
  5. To enrich the lives of youth within local areas
  6. To provide a support network for refugees, including signposting

What do we do?

Our Community Kitchens

We have 3 food kitchens per month. Our Rochdale food kitchen/food bank is on the third Sunday of the month. This is held at Kashmiri Youth Project (KYP) in Rochdale. Our joint partnership food kitchen with Oldham Baptist Church is held every fortnight on a Thursday and our Masjid food kitchen is held on the second Saturday of the month. This takes place in The Zone at Madina Institute.

Our Youth Services

Our in-house youth zone features great equipment to excite any 8-18-year-old. Ranging from poole table to foose ball, play stations to table tennis, there is something for everyone. There is a study area and reading corner for the schoolwork enthusiast as well as a fully functioning kitchen for the ones that like to play chef. There are scheduled activities every week where your child will learn something new at every session.

We run our girl’s youth club sessions every Monday evening between 6-8pm. Children who wish to attend but do not want to take part in the activities are welcome to use our in-house facilities. This is a drop-in session and children are therefore free to enter and leave anytime they wish.

Our boy’s youth club sessions are every Friday between 6-8pm.

To register your child, please attend the relevant session and complete a registration form.

Our extra-curricular activities

Get your child signed up on one of our extra-curricular activities. We run our girls mixed martial arts (MMA) class every Saturday morning between 11-12pm. These classes are charged at £12 per month. This takes place in The Zone.

We also run a boys boxing club every Sunday afternoon between 3-4pm. These classes are charged at £12 per month. This takes place in The Zone.

To register your child, please contact our head of youth services Zahir – 07826 523 509

Our Mental Health & Wellbeing workshops

We run a FREE 1-day mental health & wellbeing workshop every 3 months. These sessions look at ways to identify and challenge low level mental health such as stress, anxiety and minor depression. These are run by a cognitive behavioural therapist from Aurora Wellbeing. These sessions take place at Madina Institute Masjid & Community Hub.

We support refugees

Since 2009, we have supported over 50 families***** whom have fled their countries to seek safety within our communities, in the Rochdale and Oldham areas of the North West. Our work includes financial support (by means of Zakat distribution), signposting, befriending, food kitchens/food banks, refugee fun days and Eid gifts to Muslim & Non-Muslim refugee children. We are delighted to say, many of our supported families have integrated very well within the community and have gone on to learn fluent English, enrolling into education and have felt empowered into finding employment.

We love Community Cohesion

Community work is at the heart of everything we do. We celebrate our differences and embrace multiculturalism. We work with Greater Manchester Police, Oldham Division and St Barnabas Church in Clarksfield to raise awareness for diversity and community cohesion. We believe that to improve communities is to improve humanity. To improve one person is a step closer to improving the world. Share our passion. Work with us.
